Jets release Tim Tebow

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The New York Jets released quarterback Tim Tebow on Monday morning.

General Manager John Idzik reportedly kept Tebow through the draft in case they could find a team that might be willing to trade for him.

That didn't happen and the team selected West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith in the second round.

"We have a great deal of respect for Tim Tebow," said Jets Head Coach Rex Ryan. "Unfortunately, things did not work out the way we all had hoped. Tim is an extremely hard worker, evident by the shape he came back in this off season. We wish him the best moving forward."

Tebow saw action in 12 games this past season.  Tebow completed six of only eight passes he threw as a member of the Jets.

New York sent a fourth- and sixth-round pick to the Broncos in a trade for Tebow.

Originally a first-round selection of the Broncos in 2010, Tebow has started 16 of the 35 games he has played.

For his career, he completed 173-of-361 passes for 2,422 yards, 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions for a 75.2 passer rating and added 989 yards and 12 touchdowns on 197 rushes.
