Mesa Police say a 1-year-old boy was transported to Cardon Children's Hospital after he was found in a backyard pool near Alma School and Main Street Tuesday morning.
Authorities say the boy was in the care of an aunt at the home who was taking a nap on the couch.
The aunt claims she woke up around 8:30 a.m. and couldn't find the boy anywhere in the house. She went outside to discover the child submerged in the water, pulled him out and called 911.
"Apparently, it appears as though the child had escaped through a doggie door.. unfortunately and there was no pool fence," said Larissa Dvorak of the Mesa Fire Department.
"Any type of water, especially the pool in the backyard, the self-closing doors in the house, make sure there's a pool fence that's gated, it's locked and that your eyes are on the little ones at all times."
When emergency crews arrived at the scene, they said the child did not have a pulse and wasn't breathing. They immediately resuscitated the boy and rushed him to the hospital.
The boy remains in extremely critical condition. It's not known how long he was in the water. The aunt had been asleep for 20 to 30 minutes.
No names have been released in this case.
