Martina Navratilova Discusses 'Coming Out' In Pro Sports

Posted: Updated:

Jason Collins is making headlines after his announcement yesterday that he is gay. But female athletes have been doing it a lot longer, with a lot less press.

NBA superstars, celebrities, even the president have openly applauded Jason Collins announcement yesterday. But when female athletes have done the same thing...it's kind of no big deal, well - now at least.

New York Daily News sports columnist Mike Lupica says women have been doing this in sports for a long time and that other women have been more accepting of it. He goes on to say quote "it just kind of verifies that women are a lot smarter and cooler about this stuff".

Tennis legend Martina Navratilova talked to Steve, Maria, and Lisa about why she thinks more female athletes have come out of the closet than male ones. She also talked about how it's a good thing that Collins did what he did and also discussed how times have changed for the better.

Navratilova says back when she played, most other athletes didn't care one way or the other. The tennis great also talked about how cruel fans were and also explained the biggest reason she truly was afraid to come out.
