Animal heads, shot opossum found on Long Island

Posted: Updated:

HOLTSVILLE, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say three animal heads and an opossum shot in the face were dumped on Long Island.

The Suffolk SPCA say doctors removed more than six pellets from the opossum's face, neck and torso. The animal was discovered inside a garbage pail in front of a Holtsville residence on April 24. The opossum is expected to survive.

The animal heads, believed to be from goats or sheep, were found Tuesday in clear, plastic bags dumped about a foot off the roadway in East Northport.

SPCA chief Roy Gross told Newsday that they appeared to have been killed recently.

He said they may have been killed in a religious ritual or on a farm for food.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Suffolk SPCA at 631-382-7722.
