Northern NY bus plant gets Chicago contract

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (AP) - A northern New York bus manufacturer has landed a contract to build 300 buses for the Chicago Transit Authority with an option for 150 more.

The transit agency has agreed to pay up to $148 million for 300 buses manufactured at Nova Bus in the town of Plattsburgh. Full production is expected to begin next February.

The 40-foot-long buses will have LED lighting, multiple security cameras and improved fuel efficiency.

The Chicago Transit Authority is also a major customer of another North Country manufacturer, Bombardier. It placed a $331 million order for 300 rail cars in 2011 from Bombardier.

Nova Bus, part of the Volvo Group, has a little more than 200 employees in Plattsburgh.
