Some local car dealerships add unadvertised fees

Posted: Updated:

Thinking about buying a car? The state has clear rules that say what dealers can and cannot add to an advertised sales price.

Senior FOX 5 I-Team reporter Dale Russell stopped by a few local dealers to see if they are following the law.

If you want to read the law for yourself, here is a link to the Governor's Office of Consumer Protection: http://consumer.georgia.gov/about-us/statutes-we-enforce

Worried that you were overcharged on a car deal?

1)       Review your sales documents.   Check and see if you were charged any additional fees. Remember two things. Dealers can charge for  tax, tag, and title.   Also,  the law only applies to cars that were advertised at a certain price on the lot, in the paper, on TV, or on the internet.

2)       Try to get a copy of the original advertised price on the car you bought.

3)      You can then file a complaint with the Governor's Office of Consumer Protection: 404-651-8600.  Or,  go to their website: consumer.ga.gov.

4)      You can also email Dale Russell with your story at Dale.Russell@foxtv.com

The notion of 'Keeping up with the Jones' is not new, but there is a new pressure coming at you. Peer pressure - whether you're 13 or 33 - is a powerful thing. Now throw in social media and you have what an Atlanta counselor calls 'Keeping up with the Jones' on steroids. And if you're not careful that can get costly.

Taking on a big bank, even over something like a minor bank error, can be maddening. You feel like no one is listening. It's like being trapped in a maze you can't get out of, but somebody is noticing how frustrating that can be.
