Residents of a Barrow County neighborhood say a dangerous intersection is putting lives at risk.
They are alarmed about an intersection on Highway 81 at River Mill Road. The neighborhood is in Barrow County near the Walton County line.
People in the River Mill subdivision say they've seen numerous accidents at the spot. Traffic moves downhill rapidly on the two-lane highway where cars stop to make a left turn into the neighborhood.
Talitha Tweedy says her sister-in-law, Heather, and nephew, Collin, were hurt early last week when a truck hit the Jeep Cherokee. She says the accident left Heather Tweedy paralyzed from the waist down.
"We need to get this road changed. We want to get a turning lane here before another family has to suffer that we are going through," said Talitha Tweedy.
In addition to neighborhood traffic, residents say school buses have to make the turn there and are also in danger.
"It's 2.2 miles from the last time that there is anything to impede traffic and keep them from going faster, so for 2.2 miles all they're doing is accelerating," said Sydney Bellville Moore, a neighborhood resident.
Georgia Department of Transportation engineer Bayne E. Smith a letter sent this week to the homeowners' association saying, "I want you to know that we are taking your concerns seriously. Georgia DOT is reviewing crash data and the detailed roadway characteristics now to determine how to improve safety at the intersection..."
The DOT says it expects to have more information for homeowners in 5 to 7 days.
Residents in that neighborhood say they are now gathering signatures on a petition to present to officials calling for safety improvements at that intersection.
