Police: Wrong-way driver causes deadly head-on in Denton

Posted: Updated:
DENTON, Texas -

Police say a wrong-way driver on Interstate 35W in Denton caused a head-on collision, killing himself and a woman.

Two additional drivers in separate cars were involved in the crash. They were taken to Texas Presbyterian Hospital and have already been released.

The wreck happened Saturday morning between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. near mile marker 82 and Crawford Road.

"The Denton 911 dispatch started receiving several 911 calls," said Officer Orlando Hinojosa with the Denton Police Department.

Police are still trying to figure out why Juan de la Cruz Jr., 25, was driving southbound in the northbound lanes. Investigators said he was driving a Honda Accord and slammed into a Toyota Highlander. Both Cruz and Amy Lynne Morrow, 55, died on impact.

Accident investigators shut down both lanes of traffic for about four hours as they waited on tow trucks to clear the mangled cars off the interstate.

Police are investigating whether alcohol or speed played a factor.
