LA Mayoral Candidates: Boost Education Reform

Posted: Updated:
Los Angeles, CA -

(FOX 11) The countdown is on for the May 21st election and the candidates are coming-a-courting. While officially the Mayor of Los Angeles has no role in how the public school system is run, extra-officially, he/she can play a big role. The Mayor's office is a great bully-pulpit.

And education is an issue voters always say is near and dear to their voting hearts. That's why both candidates - Wendy Greuel and Eric Garcetti were out this morning talking about education reform and  the California law commonly known as "Parent Trigger."

Each candidate addressed a very small group of parents this morning in Jefferson Park - I counted 14 from a school that has over 600 students - in an effort to win their vote. The parents are from 24th Street Elementary and recently used "Parent Trigger" to hopefully turn their low-performing school around.

Wendy Greuel told the mostly moms that she wants to be the "education reform mayor" and spoke as a mom of a 4th grader who attends a public school. The mom's smiled every time she mentioned her son Thomas, which she translated to "Tomasito" for them.

But they were also smiling a lot when Eric Garcetti arrived speaking primarily in español, their first language and in some cases, their only language. They smiled a lot when he spoke of his Mexican grandfather with an 8th grade education.

Lots of smiling and picture taking, but will it translate into 14 more votes for any one candidate?

Hard to tell and while the mom's shared a smile with me too, they wouldn't share which, if any, of the candidates had wooed them enough to vote for them.
