Atlanta mayor vows to fight phone snatching

ATLANTA -

Atlanta's mayor says he is disgusted by brazen crimes that make citizens feel they cannot be safe anywhere.

Mayor Kasim Reed reacted angrily on Monday to a report that cable television anchor Carol Costello was mugged while she was talking on her cell phone.

"My gut reaction is that that's why I've invested more money in public safety than anybody that has ever had this job and that we're going to do something about it," Reed said.

The snatching of iPhones has occurred so often that it's been given a street name: "Apple picking."

Reed said that he's getting personally involved in trying to come up with new crime-fighting strategies.

"I am going to have a series of countermeasures put forward for behavior like that and every reasonable consideration is going to be made by me and I want people to know that I get it and that that is a big deal, and I don't think it's funny, and I don't think it's laughable, and I take it extremely seriously," Reed said.

The mayor says although the crime numbers generally are down, those stats mean nothing if criminals believe they can strike any time of day and out in the open.
