Police chief sends text message for rescue after falling in well

Posted: Updated:

The City of Kemp police chief was rescued from an abandoned water well he fell in by sending a text message.

Kemp Police Chief Jimmy Council was helping Kaufman County Sheriff's officials respond to a call of livestock loose on FM 2860 on Tuesday morning.

A short time later Council had fallen in and texted officials at Kemp City Hall to rescue him.

Deputies found Council and used a long dog leash, according to Kaufman County officials, to reach him until fire personnel arrived on scene.

Council was in the abandoned well for nearly an hour and fell down nearly 15-20 feet before bracing himself.

Council only has minor injuries from the incident and was taken to a local hospital after being rescued.
