A close-knit Georgia community is coming together to remember a hero. Towns County Lt. Brian Wilson was off-duty driving with his teenage sister-in-law on April 28 when doctors say he had a seizure behind the wheel.
Wilson's vehicle went off the road and into Lake Chatuge. His sister-in-law to escape, but Wilson could not. Divers eventually pulled him out in critical condition.
"The response was tremendously fast and everybody did a wonderful job everybody did everything they could and just unfortunately you know," said Towns County Sheriff Chris Clinton.
Wilson was transported to the hospital, where he passed away on May 3.
Wilson, 29, had been with the Towns County Sheriff's Office since 2005n after serving in the Marines.
In Hiawassee, Wilson was remembered as a friend to many. Dozens turned out at his daylong viewing at a local church.
"He was a unique individual. Brian had a way of really making a lot of people laugh," Clinton said.
Harold Ledford, Brian's pastor at Macedonia Baptist Church, says the law enforcement officer had a newfound spirituality.
"He attended church very regular, him and his wife and they were very good people," said Ledford.
Wilson is survived by a wife and a 3-year-old daughter. Friends tell us he went to school married and loved it in Hiawassee.
"We'll never be able to fill his shoes but what we can do is celebrate the 29 years that he really blessed this earth and this community," Clinton said.
Wilson's funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at McConnell Memorial Baptist Church, located at 84 Church St, Hiawassee, GA.
