A suspect who stole a pickup truck was apprehended after a nearly hour-long chase through Dallas and Mesquite.
Armando Fuentes, 29, led authorities on a chase that began in Terrell, traveled through Fair Park, Pleasant Grove and parts of Mesquite. The chase began a little after 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
The man drove on major interstates, like I-30 and 635, and major side streets.
Spike strips finally slowed down the suspect around 11 a.m., but the final moments of the chase had the driver traveling the wrong way on a side street.
The pickup was stolen from a parking lot of a Terrell insurance company.
Charlie Harris, the owner of the vehicle, was inside the insurance office when a clerk told him someone was driving his truck away.
"I tell him get out of my truck, so he runs up to me he tries to hit me, so I hit him in the jaw," said Harris.
Harris hung on to the truck as it was being stolen and jerked the steering wheel so the suspect wouldn't hit a child in the truck's path.
"The only thing I could think of is oh my God, he just saved our lives," said Jennifer Dillman, a babysitter taking care of an eight month old who was on the other side of the parking lot.
"That would have been the end of me and Adam because it was a flatbed truck and he would have pinned us up against the trunk of my car," Dillman said.
Harris fell off the truck and the suspect drove away, triggering the police's pursuit.
Fuentes likely faces charges of aggravated assault against a public servant and evading arrest with a motor vehicle and vehicle theft.
