DETROIT (WJBK) -

There was a huge fire Wednesday at an auto salvage yard on Detroit's west side complete with billowing black smoke and a number of explosions.

American Auto Recyclers near Joy Road and West Chicago has a lot full of used auto parts, rubber, grease and gasoline -- everything you don't want near a fire.

"A gas tank exploded down there by the crusher... and that's what started the fire," said employee Richard Hunt.

Firefighters tackled the blaze from above and from the ground.  The fire jumped from place to place, igniting car after car.

Putting out the fire wasn't easy. The heavy smoke seemed to draw a crowd of gawkers, getting in the way of firefighters trying to protect residents and stop the fire from spreading.

Crews battled the blaze for hours.  So far, no injuries or missing employees have been reported.
