4 officers, innocent driver injured during chase in Detroit

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

Several officers were injured along with an innocent driver during a police chase and crash in Detroit.  Thankfully, everyone is expected to recover.

Severe police cars were rammed by a suspect running from police.

At Chalmers and East Outer Drive, the suspect in a silver blue car crashed into an innocent driver.  She is in temporary serious condition, and four officers -- two from Detroit, one from Harper Woods and one from a U.S. Marshall's task force -- also suffered minor injuries.

"They [were] coming from everywhere, just coming down the street, just flying everywhere, just popping and jumping and going on," said witness Arvin Heath.  "I saw them when they were chasing the cars right down the street, and then all of a sudden a big boom."

That is how one witness described the demolition derby, which also involved a church van.

Sources told Fox 2 the suspect being chased was Willis Barkley, who is wanted in connection with a recent rape in Harper Woods.  He took off when he realized officers were following him on I-94.

Sources also said Barkley is a fugitive out of Washtenaw County wanted for cutting his tether.  The U.S. Marshall's task force was asked to assist Harper Woods police in trying to catch him.

"There was a physical altercation once the officers took the suspect into custody," said witness Kenneth Thomas.

Barkley was quickly arrested and is back behind bars.  He could be arraigned this weekend.  He is expected to face multiple felony charges.

Michigan State Police are tallying up the damage and handling the investigation.
