SMU briefly locked down Friday due to active shooter reports

Posted: Updated:

The SMU campus, Bush Center and DISD's Stonewall Jackson Elementary were locked down briefly this morning after a man called police threatening to commit suicide.

The school sent out an alert just after 9 a.m. on Friday morning.

A short time later, the suspect was arrested in a parking lot on Mockingbird Lane, just east of campus and across the street from Mockingbird Station.

Witnesses say police officers tasered the suspect before handcuffing him and taking him away. The only weapons found on the suspect were two pocket knives.

Dallas police said in a statement the incident originated around 6 a.m. on Friday morning when officers responded to a call from a man trying to kill himself.

When they arrived on the scene, he was no longer at the address. Inside an apartment a letter was found indicating the man was a danger to himself and others.
