Election Night Headlines

Posted: Updated:

History was made in Plano on Saturday night, where voters elected Harry LaRosiliere as the city's first African-American mayor. Voters there also approved a referendum to allow hard liquor sales, a move supporters said would add millions of dollars in tax revenue to Plano's finances.

In Dallas, voters overwhelmingly ushered in Jennifer Staubach Gates, daughter of Dallas Cowboys quarterback legend Roger Staubach, as the new Dallas City Council member for District 13. The position, vacated by Ann Margolin, featured a crowded field of competitors, but Gates won easily by a 2-to-1 margin over her closest competitor.

Redistricting pitted two Dallas City Council incumbents against each other. Scott Griggs defeated Delia Jasso for the District 1 seat. Griggs, a patent attorney and outspoken critic of urban gas drilling, said he looks forward to more economic development for his constituents in Oak Cliff.

In Fort Worth, city councilman Sal Espino fended off a strong challenge from challenger and former councilman Jim Lane, while in Arlington, Mayor Robert Cluck easily won re-election.
