A smartphone won't do your student's homework for them, but it might help.  In fact, there are a few apps that both students and parents might want to consider this school year.

It is a debate between what type of technology you need to get for your student. The question now, should you get a laptop or a tablet?

ATLANTA -

Shopping for graduation gifts can be a headache, especially when the graduate in your life may be asking for the latest, greatest gadget.

High on the list for any grad is a new smartphone with a data plan. Now is the time a lot of parent invest in a better phone for their children and while the temptation is usually to head straight for the iPhone display, there are really a lot of other great phones on the market right now including phones that support Windows, Android and Blackberry. So, shop around on one that would fit your graduate's lifestyle before settling.

There is also a big temptation to buy a graduate a tablet, but most college students will need laptops over tablets. CNET recommends the Lenovo Ideapad Y500 with a minimum of 8 gigs of RAM and a terabyte hard drive. This impressive machine starts around $1,000.

Another fun gift is Bluetooth speakers. They help smartphone owners who carry their tunes with them a new way to enjoy their music. Bluetooth is a light and fairly inexpensive way to bring music into a college student's dorm room. The JBL Charge, Logitech's UE Mobile Boombox, and the Jawbone JAMBOX are all good products and range in price from $100 to $150.

And speaking of Bluetooth, the LG TONE+ headphones make a great gift and cost around $60. The headphones allow users to listen to music, make phone calls and it will read text messages for you.

And if you're on the go and want to keep up with your text messages, the Jabra FREEWAY is the way to go. The portable car speaker fits over the visor and will sync with your smartphone so it can read text messages, emails and even Facebook posts. The device allows drivers to keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road at a cost of about $120.

If you have any other tech gift suggestions or own one of the above devices and want to give your opinion, go to Doug Evans' Facebook page at facebook.com/DougEvansFOX5.
