Phoenix police have arrested the driver of a vehicle that slammed into a bus stop, killing a 50-year-old man and injuring another.
It happened about 4 a.m. Monday at the intersection at 27th Avenue and Indian School Road.
According to Sgt. Steve Martos, the vehicle ran a red light and swerved to avoid another vehicle before it crashed into the nearby bus stop. Martos says the driver and her passenger ran off after the accident, but the driver later came forward and called police.
A third person at the bus stop was able to get out of the way of the car before the crash and was not injured. There were about five to six witnesses at the scene.
Police have arrested the driver, 22-year-old Elsa Olivares. They believe drug and alcohol impairment to be a factor in this case. Olivares allegedly admitted to smoking marijuana and drinking.
Olivares has been booked into jail on suspicion of second-degree murder, aggravated assault, endangerment and leaving the scene of a fatal collision.
Officers are still searching for the male passenger of the car who took off from the scene. A description of the person has not been released.
The victim was identified as 50-year-old Harry Cleveland. The other victim who was hurt is in serious condition.
Family members of Olivares told FOX 10 she was at a get-together Sunday night and they asked her not to leave, but she got behind the wheel anyway. She is the mother of two young children.
