The women's service group, Altrusa, loves frogs and that's what they call their children's literacy program - Future Readers Of Garland.
They know that for a child to be successful in life she and he must have solid reading skills.
Altrusa volunteers go into Garland elementary schools and read books to first graders. They also encourage discussion about the story and create a fun atmosphere for the kids.
Mary Helen Vollmer is one of those volunteers. Twice a month for four years she's read to the students at Daughtery Elementary School. She gets a kick out of seeing how much progress they make from month to month.
The first grade teachers are glad she's there. Her presence reinforces what the teachers say to the children about the importance of reading.
Mrs. Vollmer said she has an extra reason for buying the books and being a volunteer reader. Her grandchildren don't live in Texas and she says it's "very fulfilling to sit and read to these precious children."
