Motor City's new top cop 'made in Detroit,' Craig's father says

Detroit has a new police chief. James Craig says he is coming home to cut crime in the streets and boost morale in the ranks. He was in town Wednesday.

"I didn't go out looking for jobs, but home called, and when home calls, you answer. I love the city of Detroit," Craig said.

Soon he will be the city's chief of police. The 56-year-old native Detroiter and former Detroit police officer is answering the call.

"I always had a goal to become a police chief, but particularly a police chief here in Detroit. I held true to that goal, and this is a day of true excitement," he said.

Hopes in the city are high.

"We want stability. He preaches that. We also heard him say he wanted to make the morale better. We really need that boost. So I support him a hundred percent," said Officer Baron Coleman.

Meanwhile, Craig's family will welcome him home with open arms after more than three decades away.

"You hear about being made in Detroit. That's what we got. Made in Detroit," said the new chief's father.

From an officer in Detroit to a police captain in Los Angeles to chief in Portland, Maine and Cincinnati, James Craig says his son, a proven crime fighter, is the man for this job.

"He's ready. You know, when you've got all that experience, it's great," he remarked.

The elder Craig, now 81, was born and raised in Detroit and has watched its decline. He has even been a victim of crime himself. Somebody tried to steal his car from his driveway. He is ready for his son to return and make an impact.

The younger Craig says he is ready to hit the ground running.

"I want to get here quickly. I want to role up my sleeves and start getting the work done," he told the media on Wednesday.
