Mother arrested after allegedly leaving baby to die in hot car

Posted: Updated:

A one-year-old child died after being left in a car Friday afternoon. Her mother Vinha Marks is now charged with child abandonment.

The vehicle was parked at Frank Guzick Elementary in Dallas, where Marks works.

Exenia Gomez, a teaching intern at the school, saw the one-year-old Victoria inside the vehicle around 1 p.m. on Friday. It was locked, so the 18-year-old broke the window and started doing CPR.

"When I look at the coloration of the baby and her eyes were still open, she was looking down," Gomez said. "It was really horrible."

The child was transported to Baylor Medical Center at Dallas and pronounced dead.

The temperature at 1:00 p.m. in Dallas was 85 degrees.

DISD officials say the mother started working at the school in March and is on administrative leave.

"There will be counselors on campus on Monday to help and to help the faculty. This was a co-worker, so they'll be there to help discuss any issues the faculty may have to talk about," said DISD Spokeswoman Rebecca Rodriquez.
