It's the time of year when high school students are graduating and getting ready to begin their college years.  Twelve Gwinnett County seniors honored with the prestigious Gates Millennium Scholarship will go to college for free, thanks to Bill and Melinda Gates.

Only 1,000 students across the country get the scholarship each year.  This year, five of them were from Mountain View High School in Lawrenceville.  The scholarship is awarded to low-income minority students who make the best grades in their advanced courses.

Yonas Takele will be the first in his family to attend college.  He's planning to study cognitive sciences at Yale University in the fall.

For Victor Mata, the path to get here has been especially hard.  He just lost his mother last semester, and says that it's the struggle and winning the scholarship at the same time that have made him a better person.

The Gates Millennium Scholarship covers a full ride to any college in the country, all the way through a doctoral degree if the students choose to go that route.  Each student has their own unique plans, but all five winners have the same drive to succeed.

All of the scholars say support from their parents has been crucial, along with constant encouragement from their counselors at school.

Mountain View's five Gates scholarship winners will graduate this Friday night.

You've probably heard of a match-making service that helps people find their soul mates. But you may not know that there's a nonprofit in Atlanta that offers a similar service....for people to find....the perfect pet.
