Providence Canyon: Georgia's "little Grand Canyon"

Georgia residents interested in visiting a natural wonder like the Grand Canyon don't have to travel very far. Located just 150 miles from Atlanta, Providence Canyon may be the perfect summer day trip.

The Stewart County landmark is often referred to by locals as the "Little Grand Canyon." While they may be 2,000 miles apart, Providence bears a striking resemblance to the Arizona treasure.  It may look like it was shaped from millions of years of weathering, but Providence Canyon is not naturally made. It's a result of poor farming practices in the early 1800s.

Providence Canyon is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Georgia, and it's a must-see for history enthusiasts. Another reason to visit is to become part of the Canyon Climbers Club.  To be a member, you must hike Providence Canyon, Amicalola Falls State Park, Tallulah Gorge, and Cloudland Canyon State Park. If you do all four parks and you can prove it, that makes you part of the club (and you get a really cool t-shirt).

Providence State Park offers hiking, bird watching, and plenty of unique photo opportunities. Providence Canyon does not have campgrounds, but if you're interested in camping, you can find plenty in Florence Marina, which is just eight miles away.
