Bisbee council to mull civil unions proposal again

Posted: Updated:

BISBEE, Ariz. (AP) - Officials in Bisbee are considering a revised version of an ordinance that would legalize civil unions for same-sex couples.

A City Council vote Tuesday night to formally approve the revised ordinance would set the stage for a June 4 vote.

The council approved an earlier version of the measure last month, but agreed to rewrite it after Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne and an advocacy group threatened to sue over passages they claim were in conflict with state law.

Bisbee's revised version still calls the action a "civil union," but describes it as a contractual agreement.

It also omits a line that had said couples in a civil union would be recognized as "married" and another calling them "spouses."

Several Arizona cities, including Tempe, say they are considering similar ordinances.
