DETROIT (WJBK) -

Children were literally screaming for peace. Elementary school students at Cesar Chavez Academy in southwest Detroit spoke out for themselves -- stop bullying and stop the violence.

"I feel scared if they are going to do it to me. I feel scared because they can kill me. I don't like violence at all. Violence affects me because I care about other people and I care about my community," one student said.

"There is still love. Somebody do still care, and that there is a way of being able to handle conflict without blowing up, you know, going to get a gun," said Dr. Joyce Jones.

Stop the Violence Prevention Outreach was designed to let kids be the keynote speakers since they are the faces affected by bullies and the blast of gun violence echoes on their city streets.

Wednesday, kids learned about proper conflict resolution and being the change they want to see in the world.

"They have so many issues, and they need to be heard. They need to express themselves about what's going on," Jones said.

"What happens is they start acting up, they start doing things because nobody is listening to them."

This outreach program was founded by Jones, a peace advocate who recently became one of the thousands of metro Detroiters directly affected by gun violence  when her eleven-year-old grandson was shot while he was inside his home sitting on the couch. He was hit once in the chest and in the arm.

"He's talking. He's walking. The last I heard he wasn't back in school because of the recovery and they had to stitch his arm back up," Jones said.

This peace movement will be expanding into more Detroit schools. One day, Jones said her grandson will be strong enough to tell his own story.
