Woman says newspaper's policy slights single moms

CARROLL COUNTY, Ga. -

A Carroll County mother says a newspaper's policy on birth announcements snubs single moms.

Jessica German said that when she tried to introduce her son, Cayson, to her community by placing a birth announcement in the Times-Georgian, the newspaper left out the name of Jessica's parents.

"I called the newspaper and asked why and they informed me because I was a single mom, that I could not have my parents name on my birth announcement," German said.

Jessica says the same thing happened to her sister, Leighana, who gave birth to Analee in the same week. She then noted other announcements in the paper that listed the grandparents' names after both a mother and father were listed.  However, when it is just the mother listed, the only details included are the baby's name, weight, birth date and hospital.

"My parents enjoyed my son being brought into this world as much as I need.  They brought me into this world, it should be their right to celebrate their grandson," German said.

The newspaper says in the case of an unmarried mother, their policy is to not include the name of the biological father. In a statement, they said, "We at the Times-Georgian are proud to publish complimentary birth announcements for our community. That said, with respect for potential legal liabilities, we make every effort to protect the rights of all involved. Where the legal line is potentially unclear, we choose to publish only the name of the birth mother."

The managing editor told FOX 5's Denise Dillon that he was unsure if the policy included not printing the maternal grandparents' names. He did say that if Jessica's birth announcement were to be rerun,  it would probably be printed the exact same way.

Jessica said she thinks the policy is unfair to her and to all unmarried mothers.

"I want single moms to have just as much recognition as married moms do because we work hard for what our children do have," said German.

FOX 5 checked the policies of some other newspapers. Most said they charge for announcements, so they print what the person pays for.
