Teen charged in bias attack on activist

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The NYPD has charged a teen for assaulting a gay rights activist in Midtown early Saturday morning.

Police say 19-year-old Manuel Riquelme was arrested and charged with assault as a hate crime and harassment.

The victim, Eugene Lovendusky, was walking with his partner and another friend after leaving a Midtown nightclub. The three men were headed towards a subway stop, when a group of nine teens, including Riquelme, passed by and started calling them anti-gay slurs around 3:20 a.m.

According to police, Riquelme allegedly hit Lovendusky in the face in front of 350 West 42nd Street and Eighth Avenue. Lovendusky called police, who later found the teens in a pizzeria on West 40th Street and Ninth Avenue.

Lovendusky, a LGBT activist, had recently spoken during a rally against hate crimes, after the bias shooting that killed Mark Carson on May 17.

This incident is latest of bias attacks in recent weeks, which has prompted the NYPD to increase patrols.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
