Former APS official resigns from Texas school district

ATLANTA -

A former Atlanta Public Schools executive has resigned from his job in the Dallas, Texas school district.

James Oberlton was the chief of information technology for APS. He resigned his six-figure job as chief of staff for the Dallas Independent School System on Monday.

Oberlton told his boss in Dallas that he expects to be indicted by the federal government for something he did while on the payroll here at the Atlanta Public Schools.

Those who worked with the former APS information technology chief were caught off-guard by the news.

"It's shocking because while he was here, there were no eyebrows raised or any type of issues that would have come up that would have caused any concern,' said Dr. Howard Grant, the APS Board's executive director.

A spokesperson for APS says the federal government did reach out to the district to get information for their investigation.

The superintendent in Dallas said that he was angry and disappointed because Oberlton was just hired in January and did not mention he was under federal investigation.

Dr. Grant says Oberlton was hired by former superintendent Dr. Beverly Hall. Co-workers said Oberlton was professional and low-key.

Oberlton worked for APS from 2004 to 2007. His possible indictment appears to have nothing to do with the ongoing cheating scandal.

Grant says any obvious problem with an audit or anything else should have crossed his desk.

"If something were done…it didn't raise to the board level. The board had no reason to question any of his activities or his actions," Grant said.

Oberlton worked for Baltimore City Schools after leaving Atlanta. There was controversy about his spending practices then, but nothing rose to the level of criminal charges.
