Police canvass neighborhood for clues in string of crimes

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Police fanned out across an Atlanta neighborhood on Tuesday in search for clues in several crimes. Over the past few days, there have been two shootings and several armed robberies.

In one crime, an Atlanta Braves fan was shot in the face walking home from a game earlier this month. Authorities said that the 22-year-old victim was shot once in the face on May 17 while walking in the area of Grant Street and Georgia Avenue.

The victim told police that he was accosted by two young men as he walked home from a Braves game. Authorities said that the men did not demand anything before firing the shot.

Surveillance footage shows the victim walking moments before the crime. Seconds later, two men are seen. Other camera angles show the two suspects running away from the crime scene.

The victim lost sight in one eye as a result of the shooting.

Police canvassed the area on Tuesday in search of leads. Authorities are investigating if a string of crimes from Grant Park to east Atlanta are connected.

"We believe a string of crimes that have occurred [are] really similar to the same m/o that had occurred the other night," said Atlanta Police Chief George Turner.

One of those is the murder of Patrick Cotrona along Flat Shoals near East Atlanta Village over the weekend.

Cotrona's sister, Kate, said that 33-year-old victim graduated from Georgia Tech and worked as a video game programmer. He was just walking back to his east Atlanta home when he was shot and killed, his sister said.

"The night that he died was not the first time that he walked down the street. I don't think it ever occurred to him something would happen to him. He was such a kind and loving, non-confrontational person," said Kate Crumm.

Friends of Patrick Cotrona gathered to pay their respects to him on Tuesday.

Police said they are bringing extra officers into the area.

Anyone with information on the crimes is urged to call CrimeStoppers at 404-577-8477.
