Islamic Center sign in Alpharetta vandalized

Posted: Updated:

Members of the metro area's Muslim community are outraged after a vandal targeted their community center. The entrance sign to the Islamic Center of North Fulton was defaced with the words "London Justice" and "Where is Justice."

The spray-painted message apparently references a recent attack against a soldier in England.

Dr. Muiz Mumtaz, the chairman of the board at the mosque, said it's unfair to target Muslims who had nothing to do with what happened to the soldier.

Alpharetta said they are actively searching for the suspect, who was confronted by a witness Monday just after midnight after the man was seen spray-painting the sign. The suspect was said to have had a British accent.

"People's tensions run high when certain things take place in our society," said Officer George Gordon of the Alpharetta Police Department. "If people would just use logical thought process and simmer down and think things out and just deal with emotions -- a lot of this goes away. There is no reason to damage the property of another or take property of another. This offense itself is criminal in nature. It is a place of worship."

Alpharetta police are working very closely with the federal investigations to determine if the incident is something that could be classified as something more than an act of vandalism.
