Jasper man to face judge today over meth charge

Posted: Updated:
PICKENS COUNTY, Ga. -

A 56-year-old Pickens County man is expected to appear in court Tuesday after GBI and local authorities discovered explosives and methamphetamine at his home.

Steve Burgess was due in court on a charge of distributing meth. Investigators are still deciding which charges Burgess will face regarding the explosives.

Pickens County Sheriff's deputies reported finding the explosives while delivering a restraining order against Burgess at his home along Talking Rock Road in Jasper. The deputies went into the home and discovered some explosive devices, according to Lt. Kris Stancil of the Pickens County Sheriff's Office.

A GBI bomb squad was called and police issued a voluntary evacuation to residents while state and local bomb technicians checked out the items.

Stancil described the explosives as industrial in nature, including two dynamite-like tubes. Caps and fuses which could make the explosives active were also found, according to authorities.

Deputies arrested Burgess after they allegedly found methamphetamine in his home.

Burgess is being held at the Pickens County Detention Center on charges connected to the meth. He could face additional charges in connection with the explosives.

The investigation is ongoing.
