Machete threat? Harrison Twp. man facing assault charge

HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -

A case of road rage in Harrison Township ends with a man allegedly pulling out a machete. The suspect claims there was no weapon, so what led to these allegations?

It was around 5:00 p.m. when 48-year-old Joe Templin was in his pickup truck traveling near Harper and Crocker in Harrison Township. He had a couple of propane tanks in the cab, but there was no tailgate to properly secure them.

"Put a bungee cord around them and a wooden thing," Templin said. "When I took off, the bungee cord broke, didn't realize it."

A female motorist did. She saw one of the tanks rolling down the road.

"So she pulled up alongside to notify the driver that his load wasn't secured," said Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham.

"No problem. I go, 'I'm sorry. Sorry it happened,'" Templin said.

"The driver of the vehicle became agitated, started yelling at her," Wickersham said.

Templin suggested that is because the lady saw him laugh, but he told us the smirk she saw was about something else.

"I wasn't chuckling at her," Templin said. "She goes, 'Oh, my god, you think it's funny that you almost caused an accident.'"

"She's kind of just going off, and I'm going whoa, whoa, this is kind of freaking me out."

Then the colorful language commenced.

"I said, 'You can be gone [expletive]. Be gone [expletive].' That's what I said. I said, 'Be gone. Get the [expletive] out of here,'" Templin said. "You already did your good deed. You said what you had to say. I said I'm sorry. Done."

"Our victim then followed him, and he pulled into a mobile home community," Wickersham said.

"She followed him to his home, which is uncalled for," said neighbor and witness Alexis Lindsey. "Joe was asking her to leave, and she stood there screaming and yelling."

"The occupant of the home then came out wielding a machete and allegedly put it up to her throat," Wickersham said.

"I go, 'Are you crazy? Can you get the hell out of here?'" Templin said. "She's crying, 'Oh, he's got a knife.' I go, 'Wouldn't she leave if I had a knife?'"

"No machete. No implements of death."

"Next thing I know, I think it was her husband came out and started screaming and yelling at him and threatening him," Lindsey said.

We're told she was calling him, and according to them, she said something like this.

"Are you going to let this guy say this stuff what he said to me? Are you going to let him do this? You should get over here and kick his ass," Templin said.

"When her husband came, it was a whole different show. It was like a big show out of drama," Lindsey said.

"He actually showed up at the time of the assault. The subject saw her husband drop the knife and picked up the knife and went back into the house," Wickersham said.

Templin was arrested at his son's house, and a machete was confiscated at his home. He has been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon.

"It was very extreme. It wasn't like he came out with a baseball bat or a little knife. He came out with a big machete. He was obviously going to prove his point," Wickersham said.

The sheriff also said no matter what, that woman should have never gone to Templin's house and then got her husband involved. She had all the information she needed to get to a safe place and then call police.

Templin said he does have a machete, but he and Lindsay claimed he did not bring it out during that altercation.

As far who really did what or didn't, that will have to be settled in court.
