NOVI, Mich. (WJBK) -

Rain barrels fill up fast and help save homeowners money, according to Chris Merucci of Great Lakes Rain Barrel in Livonia. His company has two rain barrel sales are scheduled for June.

We went along with Merucci to his brother's house in Novi where he recently installed a 65 gallon barrel near the backyard.

As Merucci demonstrated, his rain barrels are easy to install. They come with a do-it-yourself kit, and he said they fill up in less than an hour during a typical rain storm.

"65 gallons of water doesn't sound like an awful lot, but when you're watering your hanging baskets, potted plants, everything else, it goes a long way," Merucci explained.

He said a rain barrel, which costs about $100, will pay for itself in a few short months. Some communities also offer green credits and give people with rain barrels a rebate on their water bill.

It has been three years since Merucci started his business distributing rain barrels for the company EarthMinded, and he said their popularity is growing. The barrels use a diverter system, which prevents them from overflowing. They are sealed so critters and mosquitos can't get inside. The tops can be converted into planters, and users can even buy a solar-powered pump for watering.

"It's better for the plants. It's free. You're saving water. You're saving money. It's just a win all the way around," Merucci said.

Two models will be on sale for $75 and $85 at two upcoming events on June 8 in Rochester Hills and June 14-15 in Canton. You can also pre-order online. Click here for more information.
