Court upholds livery pick-ups in outer boroughs

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

New York's highest court upheld a State law allowing livery drivers to pick up fares in Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, Staten Island and northern Manhattan.

"With this decision, we can finally bring safe, reliable taxi service to the four and a half boroughs that don't currently have it," said Mayor Bloomberg.

"That's a victory for everyone who lives in, works in or visits New York City. This will also advance our efforts to make taxi service available to people with disabilities, by adding 2,000 wheelchair-accessible yellow cabs to the streets."

The Court of Appeals in Albany rejected claims by medallion owners and taxi lenders that the law is unconstitutional.

A judge last June barred the Taxi and Limousine Commission from proceeding with plans for the city to sell 18,000 of a new kind of permit that lets livery cabs pick up passengers who hail them, but excluding Manhattan below 96th Street and the two airports in Queens.

The AP contributed to this report.

Taxis come in yellow, green, black, and now... hot pink? They're called SheTaxis and they are from a cab service for women by women. (The cabs aren't actually pink, but drivers will carry pink pashminas.)The service is coming to New York this week. You could almost think of it as an all-female Uber.
