Funeral for 4-year-old girl killed by runaway SUV

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A funeral will be held Sunday for the 4-year-old girl who was killed by an SUV on the Upper West Side last week.

Mourners have been pouring in Leo F. Kearns funeral home in Rego Park, Queens all afternoon to say goodbye to a little girl gone far too soon.

This is something that should never happen, children attending a wake for another child.

"Just a beautiful, beautiful little girl, all I can say – this is a horrific tragedy."

The horror occurred last Tuesday morning at 97th Street and Amsterdam Avenue as Ariel walked to preschool with her grandmother.

Police say a 17-year-old speeding driver jumped the curb and hit them.

Ariel's grandmother remains hospitalized in critical but and in stable condition. The driver, Franklin Reyes, has been charged with vehicular manslaughter.

In addition to the crash investigation, FDNY officials are investigating why an ambulance was dispatched four minutes after the initial 911 call. Officials say the dispatcher missed the alert on her screen because she got up from her desk before relief came.

However, the dispatcher union says it was a technical glitch -- not human error.

A family friend Henry Ortiz says the family is still in a state of shock.

"Something beyond your imagination -- I have kids of my own."

The 911 dispatcher in question is still on the job taking call while an investigation into her actions remains underway.

Officials say they can't speculate on whether or not that four minute delay could have saved Ariel's life.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
