New Yorkers can get a bad rap for their in-your-face attitude, but when it comes to the service industry, they may be the friendliest of the bunch.
"No, because I mean I've been in this business for about 45 years and usually I've all the levels of restaurants, diners and everywhere they are very generous," said diner manager Spiro Argieros.
A new poll by discount company CouponCodes4U.com names New Yorkers as the best tippers in the country.
"I think so. I think it's true. Because I'm a limo driver, and they give tips," said Eddie Marin.
And the stingiest? Sorry Arkansas, looks like you're getting a bad rap. Then comes West Virginia, North Dakota, Georgia and Alabama on the low end of the generosity scale.
How about Arizona? Let's say you're at a nice meal. What do you tip? Here are some of the responses we received:
"20 percent.. every time? If it's good service."
"About 12 or 15 percent.. just depends."
"Between 15 and 20 percent."
More than half of the people polled nationwide say they'd rather pay a higher bill than tip. About a quarter say it depends on the service. And more than half say they feel pressured to tip, even when they get bad service.
Back here in the valley, would you ever dine out without leaving a tip?
"Best to leave a penny, to let them know that you didn't' forget."
"Just horrible waitress... unattentive, didn't bring the food in time.. you waited too long to get your food. All that good stuff... so ya I've not tipped before."
When compared to other countries, the United States comes in second for having the best tippers behind Germany. The worst tippers are in Italy.
