GARLAND, Texas -

A man who tried to outrun police lost control of his motorcycle and died in a violent crash.

Garland police said an officer attempted to stop the suspect on Miller Road near Jupiter Road around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday for a traffic violation. But when the officer turned on his lights, the motorcycle sped away.

It reached speeds of about 100 mph before running a red light and slamming into the side of a Cadillac at the intersection of Miller and Plano roads. The crash was so forceful it spun the car around almost 180 degrees.

The motorcyclist, identified as 27-year-old Kelvin Darrelle Terry, was taken to the hospital where he died.

The man in the Cadillac suffered only minor injuries.

Police are still trying to figure out why the suspect tried to run.

Also during rush hour Wednesday morning a motorcycle rider died in a crash on northbound Highway 75 at Midpark Road. The motorcycle hit a moving crane.

The crash caused major traffic backups in both northbound and southbound lanes of the freeway.
