Workers rescued from stuck platform at high-rise

Two workers who were trapped on a partly-collapsed window-washing platform on the Hearst Tower in Manhattan on Wednesday have been rescued.

Dozens of firefighters responded to the scene to help the men, who were conscious and communicating with responders during the operation. Firefighters could be seen on the roof of the tower as well as behind the windows on the 44th floor, which is level with the platform.

Both men were wearing safety harnesses. The first responders lowered additional lines to them before the rescue.

The responders cut a 4-foot-by-4-foot panel of glass from a window and pulled the workers to safety through the hole.

The FDNY got on scene from about 2:40 p.m. Many fire and EMS crews are there. The NYPD has shut down 57th Street from 7th Avenue to 9th Avenue.

Medics checked out the 26-year-old Bronx man and 49-year-old Brooklyn man and determined they were fine.

Crews then managed to hoist the stalled platform up to the roof. The FDNY said the scaffold's motors had failed.

The city Department of Buildings and the state Department of Labor are investigating the incident, the AP reported.

The Hearst Tower, located at 300 West 57 Street, is the headquarters of the Heart Corporation, publisher of Cosmopolitan, Esquire, Marie Claire, and other magazines and newspapers and owner of TV and radio stations. The LEED-certified building opened in 2006. The 46-story building's structural steel is 90 percent recycled materials, according to its website.
