Downtown LA's Renaissance, The New Hipster Paradise

Posted: Updated:

There was a time not so long ago...when the clock would strike 5:00p.m. and Downtown L.A. would quickly empty out. Not many people lived there, no night life, and lots of crime.

But oh what a difference a decade can make. The last ten years have seen an explosion of positive development downtown, where some 50-thousand people are now living and eating and shopping.

Thanks to a revival that has turned areas such as Spring Street, South Park, and the Arts District into ‘hipster paradise.' And as with so many urban areas that undergo this kind of renaissance.

There is a talented journalist who chronicles each fresh project and turn of events.

His name is Brigham Yen. And his indispensable website is called DTLA Rising With Brigham Yen. The website documents every new food shop, building project, art exhibit, mall renovation and restaurant opening in the very heart of Los Angeles.

Officials say a 16-year-old boy is "lucky to be alive" and unharmed after flying from California to Hawaii stowed away in a plane's wheel well, surviving cold temperatures at 38,000 feet and a lack of oxygen. "Doesn't even remember the flight," FBI spokesman Tom Simon in Honolulu told The Associated Press on Sunday night. "It's amazing he survived that."
