8-year-old hit by grandmother's car in stable condition

Posted: Updated:

A Prescott boy who was ran over by his grandmother's car Thursday afternoon is in stable condition, according to Prescott Police.

Officers say the grandmother was backing out of the driveway when she struck the 8-year-old boy, who was lying down. Apparently he had been swimming in the pool, and to warm up, laid down on the concrete sidewalk next to the driveway.

The boy was caught between the hitch on the back of the car and the concrete.

Hearing the collision, the woman stopped the car and pulled forward. Police and paramedics were called to the scene and evaluated the boy, who suffered a significant head injury. He was conscious and breathing during transport to Yavapai Regional Medical Center.

Once he arrived there, the boy was taken to a waiting medical helicopter and flown to Phoenix Children's Hospital.

Police say the boy's surgery was successful and although his recovery could be lengthy, his injuries are non-life threatening.

Doctors repaired head and facial cuts and a fractured lower jaw.

Police say they won't file charges against the grandmother.
