Storms topple large trees in Cobb Co. subdivisions

MARIETTA, Ga. -

Dozens and dozens of large trees -- once the pride of subdivisions in Marietta -- are now toppled onto homes, cars, driveways and streets after Thursday night's strong round of storms.

As the sun rose Friday morning, residents in the Creek Park and Windwood Forest subdivisions emerged from their homes to assess the damage. Many recalled the howling winds and pounding rain that ripped through their neighborhood in the late Thursday and overnight hours – hearing the trees sway in the wind.

Homeowner Monique Snowden said, "I was assessing the trees. I'm not really sure what's left. And, you know, that's one thing about our neighborhood. We love the trees. But, that's the downfall is that when there's strong winds ... stuff like this can happen."

Despite receiving a slew of calls since the storms started Thursday, Cobb County Emergency Management says it didn't have any reports of anyone being injured.

Instead, residents unhurt by the storms are now left with a sizable clean-up in their own front and back yards.

Snowden said, "This is the worst it's ever been. We've never had anything like this in the neighborhood."

Scott Bagwill was in disbelief after seeing the damage at his mother's Marietta home. Two trees took a chunk right out of the living room roof and left the home in shambles.

"I mean, when I walked in, I paused, I cried a little bit. But when I saw my mom, my tears went away knowing that she was safe," Bagwill said.

A few miles away off of Lower Roswell Road, Laura Rogers was counting her blessings after her home was spared from the damage of falling trees and power lines. However, she was left trapped after a neighbor's tree brought down power lines in front of her home.

While waiting for the road to be cleared of debris, Rogers pulled out a camper and generator to keep her daughters entertained.
