FOX 29 Gets Results: Neighborhood Forced To Remove Self-Installed Speed Bumps

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

"There's a bunch here. She's got four. There's three over there. There has to be like 20, 25 kids on our street," said Joe Mazzo.

Alder Street, where he lives in South Philly is kid central. But the kids describe it a different way.

"Every time we're playing a game, all the cars come," said 7-year old Carmine Nicolucci. He and other children call their street "the highway." It's the only place they have to play, but it's dangerous.

"The cars can hit somebody. They can hit a kid," said Carmine.

That's why three months ago neighbors put up their own money, about $1,000 dollars, to buy and install speed bumps.

"They don't slow down. Something has to be done," said one woman.

Neighbors admit they did it without the city's permission but claim that was only after they got no response from city officials about people speeding down their street.

However, on June 11, someone came out and told neighbors, as Mazzo explains, "'Listen. These things are going to have to come up.'"

"Our answer was, 'Why?'"

It was somebody from the city Streets Department.

"I just don't understand the reason they can't be down. If it was something for public safety I'd understand but this is something that would slow the cars down," says Mazzo.

For now, their only defense is adults yelling "car" when one comes down the street. It's their signal for kids to get out of the way and onto the pavement.

FOX 29 News called the Streets Department on Friday evening. The Streets Department got back to FOX 29 on Monday and said they will evaluate Alder Street this summer before making any decisions to take out the speed bumps.
