Bee removal calls up throughout North Texas

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - Apparently, the buzz in the air is stronger than usual.

North Texas bee removal specialists say they're getting a sharp increase in calls for help. A dispatcher for one company tells the Fort Worth Star-Telegram (http://bit.ly/13TJv8S ) that she is getting up to 150 calls a day. The owner of another says his four work crews are "slammed" by requests.

Dr. Sonia Swiger of the Texas Agrilife Extension Service says the "swarm season" was extended this year due to a cool spring. She says bees swarm when their hive becomes overcrowded and the queen bee takes her workers elsewhere.

The swarms typically won't hurt people as long as they're left alone.

Texas' summer heat is expected to tamp down the bees' movement.
