NJ considers tuition for those in US illegally

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - New Jersey lawmakers are poised to take up a bill that would allow those who are in the country illegally to qualify for in-state tuition rates at state colleges and universities.

The Assembly Budget Committee is scheduled to discuss the measure Monday. If approved, it would take effect beginning in the fall semester.

To be eligible, a student must have attended a New Jersey high school for at least three years, have a diploma from a state high school or the equivalent. They also must submit an affidavit stating they have filed or will file an application to legalize their status as soon as they are eligible.

The bill's sponsor says it provides people with an opportunity for an affordable education so they "become tax payers and not tax takers."
