Dekalb to announce new animal shelter location

Posted: Updated:
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

A final recommendation for a new animal shelter in DeKalb County is expected Tuesday.

Georgia's third-largest county has come up with three potential sites for a new animal shelter, including a location adjacent to the DeKalb-Paechtree Airport in Chamblee and a former auto dealership on Lawrenceville Highway and a 47-acre county-owned green space – which is also located on Lawrenceville Highway.

DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis is expected to make an official recommendation on where the new animal shelter should be built.

Advocates for the new animal shelter have continued to their strong public support. They're a common fixture at DeKalb County Commission meetings on the topic.

Many animal advocates say they want the new shelter to go near the DeKalb-Peachtree Airport in Chamblee, using a chunk of federal stimulus dollars. But, not all county officials are sold on the idea.

Speaking out at a County Commission meeting, Patricia Singer said, "I'm not worrying about the animals so much anymore. I'm worrying about the people, the citizens of DeKalb County and how they're being jerked around. It's just not right. It's a game. There's a hidden agenda here."

DeKalb Commissioner Lee May said, "The location that the task force has recommended is on the northern part of the county and the question really is ‘How much do we want it to be more centrally located, more neutral?'"

In a statement, Ellis said that he has reviewed the information on the new shelter and is making a recommendation that is based on a process that was "inclusive of citizen participation."

Ellis added that providing a shelter is one of his priorities this year and that he's committed to making these final steps move as "expeditiously" as possible.
