Lake Lanier boat fire ruled accidental

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) - Authorities say a boat fire that injured a 13-year-old girl and two adults has been ruled as accidental.

Gwinnett County fire spokesman Lt. Colin Rhodes says the operator of the wooden boat that caught fire on Lake Lanier Sunday afternoon reported that the boat experienced mechanical problems and began stalling before the explosion.

Rhoden says the boat had made it several hundred yards from the shoreline before the mechanical issues began. Officials said the explosion and fire was similar to marine vessel explosions that involve fuel vapors making contact with an ignition source. Rhoden says the boat was not equipped with a gasoline fume exhaust blower, but investigators haven't been able to find the source of the ignition.
