Work begins on new Ferris wheel, Skyview Atlanta

ATLANTA -

Work on Atlanta's new Ferris wheel in downtown Atlanta began Wednesday morning.

Named Skyview Atlanta, the glass-enclosed ride will rise about 200 feet in the air and feature seating for up to six people. It will operate year-round, according to the ride's developers.

The 200-foot tall Ferris wheel makes its home in the southern end of Centennial Olympic Park, in what is now a public parking lot located next to The Tabernacle. It will be easy walking distance from World of Coke, The Georgia Aquarium, CNN Center, Phillips Arena, The Georgia Dome, and the Georgia World Congress Center.

On Wednesday, crews will pour concrete for the foundation of the area where patrons will wait in line to take a ride. Also, an additional estimated 15,000 lbs. of cement -- about three truckloads -- will go into the foundation of the Ferris wheel, itself.

"You can expect a really great view of Atlanta, of all the exciting things that are down there. It's a little bit of a thrill being up that high in a fully glass-enclosed, climate conditioned gondola," said Jason Evans, of SkyView Atlanta.

Developers had said previously that the ride would cost $13.50 for adults and $8.50 for children. The ride would go around four times and last about 15 minutes, according to developers.  On Monday, Evans said that there could be a slight adjustment in that ticket price.

The ferris wheel is set to open on July 2.
