The University of Texas in Arlington campus was closed for several hours Wednesday morning because of a report of a suicidal student with a gun.
Dallas police said the student's friends contacted them with concerns about his mental health. They informed the university.
As a precaution, UTA issued a MavAlert and canceled morning classes and events. People were asked to stay away from the area and those on campus at the time were told to stay indoors.
The campus reopened at about 9:30 a.m. after police made contact with the suspect in a north Dallas apartment.
Police said the armed student surrendered to SWAT officers without incident.
Classes and events were scheduled to resume after noon.
