GLENDALE, Ariz. -

During an officer-involved shooting Thursday night, a Glendale Police officer was shot and wounded and a suspect was killed.

An employee in a Glendale convenience store called 911 to report someone acting suspiciously in the store. Police arrived, and the suspect took off running.

The suspect ran through yards and threatened residents with a gun. He was later found in a backyard, but did not comply with commands to put down his weapon.

Officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect near 51st Ave and Northern. Officer Wes Zygmont was hit, but is expected to survive. His police K-9 was shot and later died.

The suspect was taken away in an ambulance. He was pronounced dead at the hospital and has been identified as 20-year-old Jourdan Akili Wagner.

The officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings. They are Officer Kevin Robertson, an 8-year veteran of the force, and Officer Jason Chambers, a 7-year veteran.

Meanwhile, Officer Zygmont is recovering in the hospital. He is a 13-year veteran with Glendale PD. His K-9 partner Ronin was 23-months old, and served the department for only three months. The department is planning a memorial service for Ronin.

Statement by Glendale Police: “Officer Zygmont is in good spirits, and we are hopeful for a full recovery from his injuries. He is deeply saddened by the loss of his K9 partner Ronin. Our Glendale PD family will remain by his side through these first difficult days and throughout his recovery. We are humbled and appreciative of all the support we have received from the community and our law enforcement family.”
